AGARWOOD NOSEDIVE (ONLINE)
Agarwood (Oud) Accord Study
Agarwood, commonly known as Oud, is one of the most revered and fascinating materials in perfumery. Formed when certain species of Aquilaria trees produce a dark, aromatic resin in response to natural infection, agarwood has been prized for centuries across the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Its scent is remarkably complex—woody, smoky, leathery, balsamic, animalic, medicinal, and sometimes even sweet—making it one of the most distinctive olfactory themes in fragrance creation.
In this module, participants will explore the rich world of agarwood and learn how perfumers interpret and recreate its many facets. Through the study of natural oud materials, captive molecules, and classic oud-building ingredients, participants will gain insight into the artistry and technical challenges behind constructing an authentic and balanced agarwood accord.
Through guided smelling and practical formulation exercises, participants will:
- Develop a deeper understanding of agarwood’s olfactive profile and cultural significance in perfumery.
- Explore the woody, smoky, leathery, balsamic, animalic, and resinous facets associated with oud.
- Learn how different styles of oud accords are created, from traditional Middle Eastern interpretations to modern Western adaptations.
- Understand the role of natural materials and aroma molecules in building depth, richness, and diffusion within an agarwood accord.
- Create and refine their own agarwood accord under the guidance of a professional perfumer.
Ideal for fragrance enthusiasts, students, and aspiring perfumers, this workshop offers an opportunity to study one of perfumery’s most celebrated materials while developing practical skills in accord construction, material analysis, and fragrance composition.
