In this class, we will explore the enduring role of florals in perfumery—arguably the most iconic and emotionally resonant family in the olfactory world. For centuries, floral scents have represented beauty, sensuality, and emotional expression across cultures. In today’s fragrance market, where innovation often blends natural tradition with synthetic invention, florals remain central to the structure and storytelling of a perfume. Whether evoking romantic nostalgia or reimagined in modern minimalist compositions, floral notes continue to raise a timeless question: how do we balance familiarity with originality in scent?

We will focus on the characteristics and olfactory profiles of key floral materials, with an emphasis on their traditional role as heart (or mid) notes—forming the emotional and structural core of a fragrance. Students will examine common floral families such as white florals, rose, lily of the valley, and violet, learning to identify their signature traits and variations. We’ll also explore the aroma chemicals that enable florals to be interpreted, intensified, or abstracted—especially in modern perfumery. By analyzing both classic and contemporary examples, students will gain a deeper understanding of how florals contribute complexity, balance, and emotional tone to a composition. This class will provide both technical knowledge and aesthetic insight into one of perfumery’s most essential building blocks.
