MATERIAL MODULES: WOODS
In this class, we will explore woody materials in perfumery—one of the most grounding and universally resonant fragrance families. From ancient rituals to modern niche perfumery, woody notes have served as a foundation for both structure and storytelling. Today, as trends shift toward minimalist, genderless, and nature-inspired scents, woody materials are being rediscovered and reimagined for their depth, versatility, and emotional resonance. These notes often evoke a sense of rootedness, warmth, and introspection, prompting a timeless question: what makes a fragrance feel grounded, enduring, and complete?
We will examine the characteristics and olfactory profiles of key woody materials, including sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, patchouli, and modern amber woods. Special focus will be given to the role of these materials in base notes, where they contribute longevity, texture, and a sense of finish. Students will learn to distinguish between different types of woody notes—dry, creamy, smoky—and understand the aroma chemicals used to construct or enhance these effects. Through the analysis of various examples, we’ll explore the technical and emotional nuances that define each material and how they influence the overall character of a perfume. This session will deepen your understanding of how woody notes serve as both a physical and emotional anchor in fragrance composition.
