Module 2 of the The Scent & Culture Series: An Intensive in Olfactory Storytelling explores how scent can be intentionally and effectively integrated into exhibitions, educational programs, and public experiences within GLAM (Gallery, Library, Archive, and Museum) environments. Through theory and practical application, participants will learn to design, evaluate, and implement olfactory storytelling strategies that engage audiences and enhance interpretation.
Learning Objectives of Module #2:
- Define olfactory storytelling and understand its application within museum and cultural heritage practice.
- Examine the benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations of incorporating scent into public projects, including accessibility, cultural sensitivity, and risk management.
- Explore a range of olfactory storytelling formats and event designs suited to different interpretive goals and audiences.
- Identify and select appropriate scent diffusion methods based on spatial conditions and desired visitor experience.
- Develop practical knowledge of olfactory event management, including scent storage, application, and maintenance in public spaces.
- Apply real-world case studies to recognize effective strategies for olfactory interpretation and audience engagement.Sensory Materials: Participants will receive a short list of easy to find materials to purchase or pull fromtheir kitchen cabinets in preparation for the course.
