Instructor: Sofia Collette Ehrich

Module 3 of the The Scent & Culture Series: An Intensive in Olfactory Storytelling explores how historically relevant scents—including material substances, smellscapes, and period perfumes—can be researched, recreated, and preserved as part of cultural heritage. Participants will learn how to identify, classify, and brief a historically related scent - or “Olfactory Reproductions” - when collaborating with perfumers, olfactory heritage specialists or when they are a scent maker themself. The course emphasizes
the role of scent as an interpretive and educational tool and how it deepens audience engagement with the past.

Learning Objectives of Module #3:

  • Understand the principles and methods of “Heritage Scent Preservation” and its relevance to museums and cultural heritage institutions.
  • Learn to identify, classify, and research historically relevant scents for olfactory interpretation.
  • Explore ethical and interpretive considerations in recreating historical or culturally significant scents.
  • Develop skills to collaborate effectively with perfumers, including writing scent briefs for scents of historical importance.
  • How to contextualize “Olfactory Reproductions” into immersive and educational olfactory experiences that enhance visitor understanding of history and culture.
