CHYPRE ACCORD
Since its emergence in early 20th-century perfumery, the Chypre accord has stood as a symbol of elegance, tension, and structure. Rooted in contrasts—bright citrus top notes, mossy-earthy bases, and floral or fruity heart notes—Chypres embody a kind of olfactory architecture that resists simplification. Once defined by materials like oakmoss and labdanum, the Chypre family continues to evolve in response to modern regulations and tastes. At a time when fragrance trends lean toward transparency and minimalism, what does it mean to engage with a structure built on richness, contrast, and complexity?
In this class, we will explore the composition and creative potential of the Chypre accord through hands-on formulation. After an introduction to the history and key materials of Chypre—including bergamot, patchouli, labdanum, and modern moss substitutes—students will evaluate the individual components that create its characteristic tension between freshness and depth. With guided formulation, you’ll build your own Chypre base and compare it to classic references, gaining both technical knowledge and creative insight. You’ll leave with a custom blend and a set of formulation notes to support your continued exploration.
