Module 1 of the The Scent & Culture Series: An Intensive in Olfactory Storytelling introduces the core theories and frameworks that underpin olfactory museology and olfactory storytelling. We will explore how scent shapes cultural understanding, interpretation, and heritage.

Learning Objectives of Module #1:

  • Examine the anthropology of the senses and its influence on cultural perception and interpretation.
  • Recognize the importance of sensory awareness and how applying our senses can deepen engagement and understanding.
  • Explore the theoretical foundations of olfactory heritage—its practices, methods, and relevance to cultural heritage.
  • Understand the cultural significance of scent and its vital role in shaping and sustaining our collective heritage.

Sensory Materials: Participants will receive a short list of easy to find materials to purchase or pull fromtheir kitchen cabinets in preparation for the course.
